This half day awareness session covers the key aspects of drug-related deaths in Scotland, opioid-related overdose prevention, intervention and naloxone basics.  It includes a brief introduction to naloxone and how to utilise the medication in case of an opioid-related overdose.  The session can be extended depending on individual requirements.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of evidence-based overdose prevention and naloxone messages.
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of a depressant overdose.
  • Recall how and when to administer naloxone in line with Basic Life Support requirements.

Target Audience

Anyone who is likely to witness an overdose, including Health, Social Care and Voluntary Organisation staff who are in contact with people who use drugs, their families and significant others.

 
Informed Level: The informed level specifies the baseline practice-specific knowledge and skills every worker in the drugs and alcohol sector should be developing upon entering employment.
